Energy Efficiency

Promoting energy efficiency helps our customers save money and reduces the need for power plants. Georgia Power offers 18 demand-response and energy efficiency programs to help customers manage and reduce energy use. In total, the company will invest almost $500 million over the next 10 years on demand-side programs. The programs:

  • Provide free in-home energy audits that show residential customers how energy efficient their home is and ways to save energy.
  • Educate customers about ways to save energy and the benefits of compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Promote the use of ENERGY STAR® appliances and products, as well as the ENERGY STAR New Home program.
  • Provide funding to help low-income customers make home improvements for increased energy efficiency.
  • Recycle old refrigerators and freezers.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy honored Georgia Power with the prestigious 2010 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award for Energy Efficiency Program Delivery. This is the fourth consecutive year ENERGY STAR has recognized the company for its energy efficiency achievements, but the first time it has won Partner of the Year. The company won the Excellence in ENERGY STAR Promotion Award in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

An ENERGY STAR partner since 2004, the company promotes the "Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR" campaign, which encourages consumers to change a standard light bulb to an ENERGY STAR-qualified compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL). Georgia Power led the nation in 2009 for the number of pledges collected and has distributed more than 450,000 CFLs since the program began.
