Georgia Power has a long-standing commitment to giving back to the communities we serve. Our employees and retirees are the embodiment of this commitment. They donate thousands of personal hours in service each year. Each day, our employees come to work dedicated not only to providing the best electric service, but also committed to enriching their local neighborhoods. Across the state of Georgia, each local or regional plant gives back to its own community, but each year several initiatives provide a statewide opportunity for our employees to volunteer together to help the communities they serve.
Volunteer Services partners with Charitable Giving to ensure that all volunteer efforts and monetary contributions are maximized for the greatest impact on the Company’s primary areas for community service. Volunteer services coordinates the efforts of the Citizens of Georgia Power, made up of active employees and spouses, and the Georgia Power Ambassadors retiree organization. The efforts of these organizations support the company's long-standing philosophy of being "A Citizen Wherever We Serve."
The Citizens of Georgia Power, founded in 1962, consists of 48 organized chapters and more than 3,600 members throughout the state. This organization donated 79,288 hours of community service in 2012. Partnered with Ambassadors hours, there were over 144,243 community service hours on behalf of Georgia Power in 2012.
A Citizen Wherever
Georgia Power takes pride in the incredible events, programs, and organizations our employees both create and participate in. Take a look at some of the amazing things Georgia Power employees are doing!
MLK Day of Service
Instead of taking the King holiday off, Georgia Power employees celebrate each year with "a day on," when over 1,000 Georgia Power employees across the state come together to serve their local communities in remembrance of Dr. King and his legacy of service.
As part of Georgia Power's annual Earth Day celebration, thousands of our employees participate in hundreds of environmental service projects. The celebration includes partnerships with local community and environmental groups to support projects emphasizing energy efficiency and stewardship, two principles that serve as foundations of Georgia Power's environmental commitment.
The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life
Every year, Georgia Power supports the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life as our major health and human services area initiative. Relay for Life is a 24-hour walk/run relay and fundraiser that helps communities celebrate those affected by cancer. Since 2000, Georgia Power's local teams have raised almost $2 million.

The American Red Cross Donations and Drives
Georgia Power regional and local branches regularly host American Red Cross blood drives, where employees donate blood, platelets and marrow. These blood drives and "marrowthons" help save countless lives in the state of Georgia and across the nation. In fact, each pint donated can save up to three lives.
