Georgia Power Installs New Solar Canopy at Company Headquarters

The future of solar energy is bright, and Georgia Power is committed to expanding this clean, renewable energy source across the state. In fact, this year, Georgia Power completed a solar project at the company’s corporate headquarters in Atlanta to add a solar panel canopy on the top floor of the company’s employee parking deck.

This new solar "carport” will provide about 50% of the power for the parking deck and another building on the property, equivalent to just over 250kW. The company partnered with solar development companies to take advantage of the space, generate more renewable energy and provide additional shaded parking options for employees.

This isn’t the company’s first solar project at the corporate building on Ralph McGill Boulevard. Back in 2009, seven solar panels were installed on the second-floor rooftop and were later replaced by eight new panels in 2014. During this time, the Electric Power Research Institute conducted two separate, two-year studies where the systems were monitored and evaluated to assess performance of differing technologies in the southeastern climate.

Solar power is quickly becoming a growing component of Georgia Power’s energy mix. The company remains committed to further developing this energy source through the construction of new solar resources and the implementation of emerging technologies such as battery energy storage systems (BESS), recently launching its first, grid-connected BESS facility.
