Google donates $500,000 to support energy efficiency efforts for Georgia Power customers

Georgia Power

Georgia Power is recognized as a leader in energy efficiency, working with the Georgia Public Service Commission to offer a variety of programs that help customers save energy and money. Oftentimes, customers need additional assistance beyond the scope of Georgia Power’s programs. Recognizing this need, Google has made a generous donation of $500,000 that will aid in unlocking the benefits of reduced energy costs and increased comfort for those residential customers who are most in need.

"Google supports Georgia Power's community efforts to make homes across the state more affordable, comfortable, and energy efficient. We believe that all Georgians should benefit from the progress that’s been made on new energy efficiency technologies," said Amanda Peterson Corio, Global Head of Data Center Energy at Google.

This donation is supporting two key efforts already underway.

Expanding Access to Georgia Power’s Energy Assistance for Savings & Efficiency (EASE) program:

  • By helping to make necessary health and safety repairs to resolve pre-existing issues in homes, such as roof repairs, broken doors, presence of mold, carbon monoxide risks, and other conditions, previously ineligible customers will now be able to tap into additional efficiency upgrades available through Georgia Power’s EASE program. Google’s funds will also enable Georgia Power to expand this program into additional rural communities.

Replacing aging, inefficient room air conditioners in manufactured homes:

  • Google funding will allow Georgia Power to replace old, inefficient air conditioning units in manufactured homes with more energy efficient technologies under Georgia Power’s Home Energy Improvement Program (HEIP). The older units will be responsibly recycled through Georgia Power’s Refrigerator Recycling + (RRP) program.

Google’s funding has already enabled early program successes, including replacing a customer’s broken exterior door, which not only improves safety and comfort, but helps make the residence eligible for efficiency upgrades through Georgia Power’s programs.

In another case, the program was able to replace a customer’s long-broken furnace with a new, high-efficiency heat pump.

By addressing health and safety issues and replacing inefficient appliances, Google’s donation paired with Georgia Power’s energy efficiency offerings will not only improve the immediate living conditions of customers but also open up energy savings for those who need it most.

“At Georgia Power, we put our customers at the center of everything we do, working with the Georgia Public Service Commission to develop effective energy efficiency programs that have helped our customers save millions of dollars over the years,” said Latanza Adjei, Georgia Power Sr. Vice President, Customer Experience. “We are very grateful for Google’s generous donation, which will further enhance our programs for customers through additional funding to help them reduce energy use and lower energy bills with home improvements. This is an innovative and collaborative partnership with one of America’s leading companies, and we’re excited to work with Google to provide enhanced solutions which improve energy efficiency and affordability.”
